What To Do About Bedwetting
Posted by under Bed WettingLots of parents find themselves confronted with the issue of bedwetting, as one or more of their children suffers from it at some point. Wetting the bed is known in medical circles as enuresis. Bedwetting happens a lot among kids who are trying to get used to using a potty and sleeping without the use of a nappy. But even if it carries on beyond this point there are various ways to make sure the problem is resolved.
Parents must always make sure that the child isn’t punished in any way when the bedwetting occurs. Bedwetting occurs when the child is unable to wake up in time to visit the toilet in the night. Berating the child could lead to even more instances of bedwetting, because of the stress involved. But stress isn’t the only reason for bedwetting; enuresis can be caused by medical problems as well.
Bedwetting problems can be resolved in some cases simply by encouraging the habit of visiting the toilet immediately before bedtime. Make sure you consider how old your child is though; if you are potty training then simply revert to nappies during the night. If the child is older and they are having problems staying dry throughout the night, you may need to try other methods such as reducing any fluids they have not long before they go to bed. Don’t despair if your first attempt to stop the bedwetting doesn’t work - there are other things you can try.
Of course you should stay alert for any other physical signs that may point to a physical cause of the bedwetting rather than a mental one such as stress. One sign of infection of the urinary tract is pain upon passing water, so watch out for any signs like this. Once treated this should put an end to the bedwetting and get things back to normal again. You could also use a bedwetting alarm which goes off if the child wets the bed.
Finally, make sure you stay positive because it will help your child get through the situation, no matter why it began in the first place. If the child’s bedwetting upsets them, a poor attitude from the parents towards the situation makes things worse and prolongs the problem. It is important to remember that there are solutions to the problem - it may resolve itself in time or you may need to intervene in some way. But in either case bedwetting is almost always a temporary problem that will eventually go away, leaving the child able to sleep through the night with no further problems in the future.
